The umbrella body of private school owners in Nigeria, the Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN), has called on the Federal Government to immediately halt the ongoing admission processes for the 2026/2027 academic session across Nigerian universities pending the release of all outstanding O’Level results.
OPSAN raised the alarm over the failure to release a significant number of the 2025/2026 WAEC results from some public, mission and private secondary schools, while the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) are yet to release their results.
In a press statement issued by its National President, Prof. Uzochukwu Solomon Nwanonyuo, after a crucial stakeholders’ meeting on Monday, September 21, and made available to newsmen, the association said it was unfair for university admissions to proceed when thousands of candidates were still awaiting their O’Level results.
OPSAN specifically faulted the commencement of admissions based largely on available WAEC results, arguing that candidates who sat for NECO and NABTEB examinations could be unfairly excluded from admission opportunities.
“Technical Colleges, Federal Science and Technical Colleges, Vocational and Commercial schools rely on NECO and NABTEB to secure admission into higher institutions. Continuing admissions without these results automatically shuts these students out.
“This is not proper and not justified. Some Federal Universities have already concluded admissions for professional courses, while students awaiting NECO and NABTEB examination results have not even had a chance,” the association stated.
OPSAN appealed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, to urgently intervene and direct the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to suspend all admission processes until the outstanding results are released.
The association also called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to direct universities across the country to suspend Post-UTME and admission processes until all relevant O’Level results become available.
OPSAN described the situation as a national concern, questioning why candidates presenting results from Nigeria’s national examination bodies should be disadvantaged while WAEC results are available.
According to the association, relying solely on WAEC results while sidelining NECO and NABTEB could weaken confidence in Nigeria’s indigenous examination institutions and create an uneven admission process.
The group further urged WAEC to release a comprehensive list of candidates who sat for the 2025/2026 internal examinations and called on NECO and NABTEB to expedite the processing and release of their results.
OPSAN maintained that all qualified candidates should be given a fair opportunity to participate in the 2026/2027 university admission exercise.
