The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in collaboration with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has trained farmers in Anambra State on the 2026 seasonal climate prediction and flood outlook.

The one-day seminar, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners, focused on improving agricultural productivity and disaster preparedness.

Representing the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, the State Director, Chief Arthur Mbuba, said the initiative would help farmers adapt to climate changes and adopt smart farming practices.

NiMet Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the forecast serves as an early warning tool, noting that the rainy season in Anambra is expected to start around March 23 and end between late November and early December.

He warned of high flood risks in Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum, Onitsha North and South, Ogbaru, and Ekwusigo.
Officials from NIHSA and NEMA urged residents to follow early warnings, clear drainage systems, and adopt preventive measures such as insurance and improved farming techniques.
