Nigerian passport holders are set to gain visa-free access to two more African countries from January 1, 2027, following decisions by the governments of Chad and the Republic of the Congo to abolish entry visa requirements for African nationals.
The development, according to Vanguard News, is expected to make travel, business, tourism and people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and the two Central African countries easier.
Chad opens borders to Africans
Chad will remove entry visa requirements for citizens of African countries from January 1, 2027.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno announced the policy in July 2026, describing it as part of efforts to promote African integration and facilitate the free movement of people and goods across the continent.
Under the new arrangement, Nigerians and other African nationals will be able to enter Chad without obtaining an entry visa before travelling.
Congo-Brazzaville follows
The Republic of the Congo, popularly known as Congo-Brazzaville, has also announced that it will scrap visa requirements for nationals of all African countries from January 1, 2027.
President Denis Sassou Nguesso announced the decision during the 2026 African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings in Brazzaville.
According to the announcement, the policy will be subject to minimal administrative and security requirements and is designed to promote continental integration and the free movement of Africans.
The move is also expected to complement the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area by making cross-border movement easier for traders, investors and other travellers.
44 destinations on Nigeria’s visa-free list
With the addition of Chad and Congo, Nigerian travellers have access to a growing number of destinations without securing a conventional visa before departure, although some countries on the list offer visa-on-arrival rather than completely visa-free entry.
The destinations listed include Barbados, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Comoros, Cook Islands, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Dominica, Fiji, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Iran, Kenya, Kiribati, Lebanon, Liberia, Madagascar, Maldives, Mali, Mauritius, Micronesia, Montserrat, Mozambique, Niger, Niue, Palau, Rwanda, Samoa, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, St. Kitts and Nevis, The Gambia, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
However, travellers are advised to confirm current entry conditions with the relevant embassy or immigration authority before travelling, as visa policies, permitted stay periods and documentation requirements can change.
