Nigeria drops terrorism financing charges against ex-justice minister

Nigerian authorities have withdrawn terrorism financing charges against former Attorney-General and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, and his son.

The revised charge now focuses on alleged illegal possession of firearms, with authorities claiming weapons and cartridges were recovered from Malami’s residence in Birnin Kebbi.

Malami, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023, and his son Abdulaziz pleaded not guilty during a court hearing.

Prosecuting counsel for the DSS, Akinlolu Kehinde, confirmed the withdrawal of the terrorism-related charges, while defence lawyer Shaibu Aruwa raised no objection to the amended charge.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik upheld the defendants’ bail at ₦500 million each and ordered the surrender of their travel documents. The case was adjourned to May 26 for trial.

Malami is also facing separate money laundering charges involving his wife and son. He has described the cases as politically motivated following his defection from the APC to the ADC.
