No life was lost after a fire outbreak rocked the Federal Secretariat Complex in Awka, Anambra State, on Tuesday, with property estimated at over N200 billion saved through the prompt intervention of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Anambra State Fire Service.
The fire, which started around 3pm, affected a pharmaceutical office and adjoining store occupied by staff of Corixus of Nigeria, a pharmaceutical company operating within the complex.
Confirming the incident, NSCDC Head of Media and Tactical Operations, SC Okadigbo Edwin, said the fire was quickly contained before it could spread to other offices.
He said preliminary findings pointed to a possible power surge as the cause, while investigations were ongoing.
According to him, the swift response of the security and emergency teams prevented a major disaster and saved property estimated at over N200 billion.
The State Commandant, Comdt. Maku Olatunde, commended the Disaster Management Team and urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies to conduct regular electrical audits and strictly observe safety protocols.
Normalcy has since returned to the Federal Secretariat.
