Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called for an end to discrimination, stigma and harmful practices against menstruating women and girls.
Speaking on Thursday during the 2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration, Soludo described menstruation as a natural part of life that should never subject girls to shame or exclusion.
She lamented that many girls still suffer stigma, poor hygiene education and lack of sanitary materials, leading to embarrassment and school absenteeism.
According to her, society must replace shame with understanding and silence with education to help girls live with dignity and confidence.
Soludo said her Healthy Living Initiative has continued to promote hygiene and preventive healthcare across schools and communities in Anambra State.
She disclosed that the initiative has established sanitary pad banks in over 350 schools across the state, with more than 25,000 packs of sanitary pads distributed to schoolgirls.
She noted that the intervention has improved personal hygiene, restored confidence among girls and reduced absenteeism in schools.
The governor’s wife urged parents, schools, religious bodies, corporate organisations and development partners to support menstrual hygiene awareness and create safe spaces for girls.
She encouraged girls not to allow menstruation hinder their dreams and aspirations.
