COMMENTARY:Clamp Down On Chemical Ripening Of Fruits To Save Lives

 By David Onwuchekwa

The alleged practice of using chemicals to force fruits to ripen by some fruits sellers has become a disturbing trend, especially in urban areas where fruit sellers seek quick profits.

These sellers go to rural markets, purchase unripe fruits in large quantities, and then subject them to chemical substances that artificially induce ripening. The fruits commonly involved, according to findings, include bananas, watermelons, cucumbers, local apples, among others.

At first glance, these fruits may look attractive to buyers because they appear fresh, ripe, and ready for consumption. But behind the shiny appearance lies a dangerous reality.

When chemicals are used to force ripening, the natural process of fruit development is disrupted. As a result, the fruits are not only deficient in the natural nutrients expected of them but also harmful to human health.

Consumers of such fruits are unknowingly exposed to deadly health conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, heart diseases, and other life-threatening illnesses. This is a silent health crisis that must not be ignored.

It is surprising that despite the clear dangers, the practice continues unchecked. One cannot help but ask: why are state governments, local government councils, and regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC pretending that they are not aware of this menace?

If ordinary citizens are able to discover and complain about this practice, why should the authorities saddled with the responsibility of protecting public health fail to act? Silence in the face of such a harmful trend amounts to negligence.

The danger posed by chemically ripened fruits is not imaginary. Who knows how many unsuspecting citizens have already fallen victim by consuming such fruits? How many are lying on sick beds battling with strange illnesses without realizing the root cause?

How many lives may have been lost already? These questions should worry every responsible authority in the land.

There is no better time to act than now. Government agencies must rise to their responsibilities by carrying out proper investigations, identifying the perpetrators, and prosecuting them to serve as a deterrent.

More importantly, there should be routine checks in markets, increased surveillance, and strong public awareness campaigns to educate both sellers and buyers on the dangers of chemically induced ripening.

The health of the people should not be sacrificed on the altar of profit. Food safety is a fundamental aspect of public health, and protecting it is non-negotiable.

If our authorities fail to take urgent action, the silent damage caused by these practices will continue to multiply, and the cost in human lives will be immeasurable.

The time to act is now. A clampdown on this dangerous practice will save lives, restore confidence in the fruits we consume, and remind everyone that government still exists to protect the people.
