The streets of Nnewi, particularly around the Nnewi Roundabout through the DCC fence to Izuchukwu junction, are gradually being overtaken by a troubling and unchecked trend, the growing presence of street beggars.
What used to be a transit point for residents and commuters has now become a congested zone where traffic flow is disrupted, and pedestrian movement is severely hindered.
Even more disturbing is the increasing number of children among the beggars, often let loose by their parents or those who hire them, who station themselves along the roadside.
These children, being naturally playful, have turned the busy road into a makeshift playground. The result is a dangerous environment prone to accidents, with fast-moving vehicles, tricycles (Keke) and motorcycles constantly trying to navigate through crowds and darting children.
The situation has, without doubt, become a public nuisance. It reflects poorly on a town like Nnewi, which prides itself on industry, progress, and order. The Nnewi North Local Government Council cannot afford to ignore this issue any longer.
What is playing out in the DCC area is not just an eyesore, it is a serious safety and social problem that could spiral out of control if not addressed immediately.
While it is true that some of these beggars may genuinely be in need, it is equally true that a good number of them may not have any physical or mental condition warranting their presence on the streets.
Profiling and proper verification are necessary steps. The government should consider establishing rehabilitation centers or shelters where those who truly require help can be cared for, away from the hazards of the streets.
Solving this issue is not about chasing people away, it’s about restoring order, ensuring public safety, and addressing a growing challenge with compassion and responsibility.
Nnewi deserves clean, safe, and organized streets, not the chaos that is currently festering under official inaction.
It is time for the authorities to wake up and act.
