COMMENTARY: Sustaining Anambra’s Security Gains Requires Collective Support

 By David Onwuchekwa

The noticeable improvement in the security of lives and property in Anambra State and other parts of the South East in recent times is a welcome development that deserves both commendation and sustained support.

It is evident that the security architecture in the state, involving the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilance groups, has undergone commendable restructuring and coordination, resulting in greater safety for residents.

What makes this even more remarkable is the fact that Anambra is currently in an election season, a period typically associated with heightened insecurity. However, thanks to the proactive and collaborative efforts of the security agencies, the state has remained relatively peaceful, a testament to the professionalism and commitment of these operatives.

Unfortunately, there remain individuals who, for reasons best known to them, choose to downplay these efforts and focus only on criticisms.

While constructive criticism has its place, blind condemnation in the face of obvious progress serves no one. Such negativity should not derail the momentum already gained.

To sustain and even build on these achievements, the government must play its role by incentivizing security personnel through regular salary reviews, timely promotions, and improved welfare packages. These actions will not only boost morale but also deepen commitment to the job.

On the part of the residents, cooperation is key. Giving timely and accurate information to security operatives, avoiding false alarms, and refraining from unwarranted attacks on security personnel are simple but crucial steps in ensuring lasting peace and security in the state.

Security is a collective responsibility. While the operatives may be on the frontlines, every citizen has a role to play in preserving the gains already made. Kudos to the security agencies in Anambra State and may their efforts continue to yield even greater results.
