The entry of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) into the production of tricycles (Keke) represents a bold and strategic step in Nigeria’s journey toward industrial self-reliance.

For decades, Nigeria has depended heavily on imported tricycles, mostly from India and China. Innoson’s move to locally produce these vehicles not only reduces this dependence but also supports the broader goal of building a sustainable automobile industry in the country.

By manufacturing tricycles suited to local terrain and transport needs, Innoson is filling a gap that foreign products often neglect. Locally produced Kekes offer easier access to spare parts, greater durability, and better adaptability to Nigerian road conditions.

This development directly contributes to job creation, skill acquisition, and the expansion of ancillary businesses, including mechanics, spare parts dealers, and transport operators.
More importantly, Innoson’s progress serves as a symbol of what is possible within Nigeria’s auto industry. As the first truly indigenous automobile manufacturer, Innoson has gone beyond vehicle assembly to actual manufacturing, producing not just tricycles but also buses, SUVs, sedans, and trucks.
This growth strengthens Nigeria’s industrial base and positions the country as a serious contender in Africa’s automotive sector.
Despite these strides, the industry still faces challenges. High production costs, poor power supply, and stiff competition from cheaper imports continue to threaten local manufacturers. However, Innoson’s resilience shows that these obstacles can be overcome with the right mix of innovation, government support, and public patronage.
The Nigerian government must intensify its support through policy incentives, infrastructure development, and procurement commitments to locally made vehicles.
Public perception must also shift in favour of homegrown brands, recognizing that supporting indigenous companies like Innoson is crucial to national development.
The production of tricycles by Innoson is more than a manufacturing milestone; it is a statement of confidence in Nigeria’s potential to build, grow, and lead in strategic sectors.
With sustained effort and collaboration, the dream of a fully developed local automobile industry is not only achievable but already underway.
