Christians have been urged to verify information before sharing it on social media to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation.
The Catholic Cleric of Awka Diocese, Rev. Fr. Johnbosco Igwe, gave the advice during the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha’s Communication Week held at Shanahan Hall, Basilica Square of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Speaking on the theme, “Truth and Wisdom in the Digital Age,” Fr. Igwe said truth has become monetized in the digital era, making it necessary for people to cross-check information before reposting online.
He warned that artificial intelligence could weaken children’s natural wisdom, encourage hasty conclusions, and reduce concentration among young people.
He, however, noted that the digital age has improved learning, communication, Gospel evangelism, and medical diagnosis.
Fr. Igwe also classified internet users into three groups: Digital Vagabonds, Digital Tourists, and Digital Pilgrims.
Other speakers at the event discussed human dignity, combating fake news, misinformation, and the future of human voices in the age of AI.
Speaking on behalf of the Archdiocesan Director of Communication, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. George Adimike, Rev. Fr. Vincent Chukwuka said the programme was organized to promote responsible digital media use among the faithful.
Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Pius Onyegbuna, commended the organizers and advised parents to reduce excessive phone use at home, especially among children.
The event featured interactive sessions and a comedy performance by Igwe White Entertainment.
