The Anambra State Government has confirmed the death of four persons following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen on the convoy of the Chief of Staff to the Governor on Sunday night, May 31, 2026.

The government, while condemning the incident, described it as a direct assault on the peace, security, and democratic order of the state.

Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, assuring residents that security agencies had intensified efforts to track down and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

Attack on State’s Democratic Order

According to Mefor, the convoy came under attack between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. along the Orumba North–Awka South boundary while returning from an official assignment.

He said the attack transcended an assault on an individual and constituted an attack on the government and people of Anambra State.

“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the Government and people of Anambra,” he said.

Government Mourns Victims

The Commissioner expressed the government’s sympathy to the families of the victims, noting that the four persons who lost their lives deserved justice.

“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice. The Anambra State Government sends its deepest condolences to the families of those who died and shares in their grief,” the statement added.

Security Agencies on the Trail of Attackers
Mefor assured that the police and other security agencies were already working to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all those involved in the attack.

“The police and other security agencies are working to find and bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice,” he said.

Commitment to Sustaining Peace

The government emphasized that the incident would not weaken its resolve to sustain peace and security across the state.

Describing the attack as an isolated incident after more than one year of relative peace and security, Mefor reiterated the administration’s determination to eliminate all forms of criminality in Anambra.

“This isolated incident, after more than one year of peace and security in the state, will not affect our determination to remove all forms of crime from Anambra,” he explained.
