The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address delays in lecturers’ salaries, pensions and welfare payments to prevent rising tensions in Nigerian universities.
Speaking during a press conference at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Zonal Coordinator Dennis Aribodor warned that unresolved welfare issues could threaten the fragile industrial peace currently enjoyed in public universities.
The union urged federal and state governments to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and settle outstanding entitlements, including salary award arrears, promotion arrears, withheld salaries from the 2022 strike action, pension contributions and other deductions.
ASUU also criticized delays in pension payments to retired lecturers and accused authorities of neglecting academics after retirement.
The union further raised concerns over alleged irregular appointments and lack of accountability in some universities, warning that questionable leadership practices could damage the integrity of the nation’s university system.
ASUU Owerri Zone covers Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike and Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
