Anambra 2025: 2,000 LP members join APC

From Mokwugwo Solomon, Awka

As the November 8, 2025 governorahip election in Anambra state gathers momentum, the Labour Party (LP) and its governorahip candidate in the state, George Moghalu, has suffered major set back as about two thousand (2000) members of the party from Anambra South senatorial district, George Moghalu’s stronghold, joined the governorahip candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state, Nicholas Ukachukwu, and pledged their solidarity and support towards his victory at the polls.

The event, which took place at the APC secretariate in Awka, the state capital, on Wednesday, June 25, coincided with the unveiling of 72 Support Groups, who also came together to work with the APC candidate.

Leader of the group, Amobi Izundu, said that LP members in Anambra South senatorial district decided to collapse into Ukachukwu’s structure in order to ensure his victory come November 8 governorship election in Anambra.

He noted that Anambra state has been in the opposition for too long, and needed to join the government at the center.

“We reasoned that Anambra has been in the opposition for too long, and needs to join government at the center. And there is no other way to achieve this than to join forces to ensure that the candidate of the APC get majority votes during the governorahip election,” he explained.

He equally assured that they would be present at their various polling stations across the senatorial district on the election day, and ensure that Ukachukwu wins.

Earlier, the governorahip candidate of the APC, Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu, thanked the LP members that have expressed readiness to work with him; saying that their sacrifices and dedication would be rewarded now and thereafter.

He said, “I am not surprised that you are joining forces to ensure my victory, because, you’re my brothers and sisters. Compare me with candidates of other political parties in this race, and you’ll see I’m the best.

“Soludo, they say, is doing his best; but his best is not enough to earn him a second term in office. To me, the incumbent governor has failed, and therefore, his failure cannot be reinforced with another opportunity. I’m happy you’re joining forces with me today, and together, we’ll oust him with our collective votes come November 8, 2025.”

While describing the action of the LP members who also joined his train as heroic, Ukachukwu also thanked the 72 different support groups, who equally gathered at the APC secretariate, for the confidence they reposed in him.

“I am humbled that hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life, and from different parts of our state come together and pull their resources together to support me. I am willing to work with all of you, and be you assured that I will not disappoint.”

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, a major LP stakeholder in Anambra South, who was among the people that declared their support for the APC candidate, George Uyammadu, said that LP is in shambles, from the top to the bottom, and that the present composition and posture of LP in the state will hardly guarantee victory for its governorahip candidate.

“Our party, LP is currently nowhere. It is in disarray. The candidate of our party is on his own; LP lawmakers – both federal and state, are on their own; leader of our party, Peter Obi, is on his own; etc. Where then do we stand to prosecute the election and achieve victory for Labour Party?

“So, after a thoughtful consideration on which governorahip candidate to support, and haven taken into consideration the condition of our own party in the state, we decided to settle for the APC and its candidate, Ukachukwu,” he noted.

On the question whether the LP group have fully joined APC, Uyammadu explained, “We are still in the LP; we’re not in the APC. We’re in LP because Peter Obi is there. In 2027, if Peter Obi remained in LP, you’ll see us there. If he joined another party for his presidential aspiration, we move with him. But for this election, Ukachukwu is our choice.”
