COMMENTARY: Adulterated Palm Oil, A Silent But Deadly Threat Demanding Urgent Action

By David Onwuchekwa

Rumours and disturbing allegations that some palm-oil dealers now mix chemicals with the product for profit are spreading across communities.

If these reports are true, it represents one of the most heartless and murderous acts imaginable.

Adulterated palm oil, often laced with dangerous dyes or industrial substances, is being sold to unsuspecting consumers as genuine red oil, a staple used daily in homes across Anambra and beyond.

What makes the situation even more troubling is the brazen deception. These perpetrators will confidently swear by their forefathers that the oil is pure and of the highest quality, fully aware that they have poisoned it in the pursuit of quick money.

Consumers buy this oil in good faith, prepare meals for their families, and unknowingly expose themselves to toxic compounds that can trigger severe health complications, including organ damage, infertility and various cancers. Many end up battling strange illnesses without ever knowing the true cause.

Yet, ironically, some of these same traders are often the loudest voices when violent crimes are discussed. They condemn armed robbers, kidnappers and ritualists, calling for harsh punishments, without admitting that their own actions amount to slow, mass killing.

The difference is that their victims die quietly, one by one, and the crime is hidden behind a plate of food.

This menace demands immediate intervention. NAFDAC and all relevant regulatory agencies must treat these allegations with utmost urgency.

Proper investigation, routine market surveillance, testing of food products and strict enforcement are needed to fish out offenders and ensure they face adequate punishment.

There is no justification for poisoning the public under the guise of business.

Beyond palm oil, other food items may also be adulterated. Some unscrupulous traders knowingly sell harmful products they would never allow into their own homes. This level of wickedness must not be tolerated.

The time for action is now. Our food markets must be sanitized, monitored and regulated to protect the lives of innocent citizens.

Government authorities, civil society, community leaders and consumers must work together to expose these harmful practices. Food is life, anyone who tampers with it for profit is a danger to society and must be stopped.
