The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected Donald Amamgbo as its candidate for the forthcoming senatorial by-election in Anambra South Senatorial District.
Amamgbo emerged as the party’s flagbearer following a primary election held on Saturday at Anyi Bu Ofu Social Hall, Mmili Kwu, Nnewi. The exercise, supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saw other aspirants stepping down, leading to Amamgbo’s unanimous adoption.
His candidacy was affirmed through a motion moved by Ndukaba Chinedu from Orumba South Local Government Area and seconded by Anene Chukwudi from Ihiala Local Government Area.
In his acceptance speech, Amamgbo thanked party members and delegates for the confidence reposed in him, promising to bring effective representation to the Senate.
“We shall storm Anambra South, and when we win, we will go to Abuja and bring your share of democracy dividends and good governance,” he said. “I will make a difference and serve with all my heart. I’m not a professional politician, but I am passionate about the welfare of this state.”
He assured the people that despite the one-year tenure left in the Senate seat, he would make a significant impact and stand firmly for the interests of the district.
The ADC State Chairman, Patrick Obianyo, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primary and the maturity shown by other aspirants in stepping down, describing the development as a sign that ADC was ready to offer credible leadership.
“Nigeria has gone into an economic quagmire, which is why ADC was formed—to salvage the country. This is the first time Anambra South is testing a candidate of integrity under the ADC,” Obianyo said.
Also speaking, a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Godson Okoye, affirmed that the primary was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and expressed optimism that ADC would clinch victory in the coming by-election.
The Anambra South Senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed Saturday, August 16, 2025, for by-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies across 12 states.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the date during a meeting with political party leaders in Abuja on June 26, stated that the vacancies resulted from resignations, deaths, and court-ordered annulments.
