The Traditional Ruler of Ebenebe in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Christopher Emeka Nnaegbuna, has urged youths to embrace farming as a means of overcoming poverty, idleness and criminality.

Nnaegbuna spoke during the 29th edition of the community’s New Yam Festival, Arum Ji Ebenebe, held at his palace.
The monarch said agriculture had played a major role in the development of Ebenebe, noting that many successful sons and daughters of the community were raised by farming families.

He called for a return to agriculture among young people, stressing that mechanised farming could increase productivity, create employment and attract greater investment to rural communities.

“Farming built the foundation of Ebenebe’s success. Our forefathers were renowned farmers, and that legacy must continue. The younger generation must return to agriculture rather than roaming the streets or engaging in criminal activities,” he said.

Nnaegbuna also reaffirmed his commitment to peace and security in the community, saying measures had been introduced to discourage violence, cultism and the use of weapons during disputes.

He maintained that productive engagement of youths in farming could help reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities.
The Traditional Prime Minister of Ebenebe, Chief Joe Nwaegu, said the festival marked the successful completion of the agricultural cycle that began with the cultivation season earlier in the year.

He said the celebration featured a Holy Mass, traditional rites, the ceremonial breaking of the new yam and communal feasting.

Nwaegu said the festival had grown into a major cultural event, attracting visitors from within and outside Anambra State. He added that the annual yam competition remained one of its major attractions, with the largest yam determined by weighing and the winner receiving about ₦3 million.

The President-General of Ebenebe, Raymond Arinze, thanked residents and visitors for participating in the celebration, while the President-General of the Women Wing, Mrs Theresa Okonkwo, commended the peace enjoyed in the community under the traditional ruler.

The festival also attracted community groups, political stakeholders, 2027 election aspirants and NYSC members serving in the area.
