Traders at the Allied Building Materials International Market, Nteje, popularly known as Ogbo Rod, have appealed to the Anambra State Government to enforce its relocation order and provide access roads to the new market.
The traders said they had completed the new market and relocated from rented shops and roadside locations around Atani Road, Port Harcourt Road, Uga Street and Bridge Head Market in Onitsha since February 2025.
Speaking at the market, the President General, Hon. Ignatius Ejike, said the facility comprises eight unions dealing in iron, steel pipes, plastic tanks, PVC pipes and other building materials.
He said the market was designed to international standards, with adequate space for heavy-duty vehicles, shops and overhead water tanks.
Ejike, however, identified poor access roads as the major challenge facing the market and appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene by providing quality roads.
A member of the Board of Trustees, Chief Nnaemeka Onuzulike, said the market project began in 2014 and expressed appreciation for its completion and occupation.
Stakeholder Chief Ignatius Agbalizu described the market as strategically located opposite the Federal Housing Estate and near the University on the Niger. He said the traders had approved a five per cent discount for customers from September 8 to December 31, 2026.
Other union leaders appealed to members still operating outside the market to return and join efforts to develop the facility.
A tour of the market showed significant trading activities, with heavy-duty vehicles loading and offloading iron rods and other building materials. The market, built on about 1,233 plots with over 7,000 shops, still requires asphalted access roads and stronger entrance gates to improve its operations.
