Women and girls at the Kuchigoro Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja have received menstrual hygiene education and essential supplies as part of activities marking World Refugee Day 2026.
The outreach was organised by the FalconsCare Initiative for Women with Disabilities Empowerment (FIWDE) in partnership with the Bright Horizons Advocacy Network for Persons with Disabilities. Forty-seven camp residents participated in sessions focused on menstrual health, hygiene, education and inclusion.
Founder and Chief Executive Director of FIWDE, Uzoamaka Stella Ike, said the programme was aimed at promoting dignity and equipping displaced women and girls with accurate information about menstrual health and personal hygiene.
She urged participants to avoid stigma and misinformation and seek appropriate healthcare when necessary.
Executive Director of Bright Horizons Advocacy Network, Blessing Igwe James, encouraged parents to keep their children, especially girls, in school despite the challenges of displacement and poverty.
James, a Deaf woman and disability rights advocate, said difficult circumstances should not determine a child’s future.
The programme also featured an interactive session where residents shared their concerns with the organisers. Food items and hygiene materials were subsequently distributed to participating families.
The organisers said the initiative underscores their commitment to promoting health, dignity and inclusion among internally displaced persons and other vulnerable communities.
