Landlords and property owners in Trans Nkisi Layout, Onitsha, have mobilised resources to tackle the devastating impact of gully erosion and flooding in the area, constructing wide and deep drainage channels at strategic locations to control floodwaters.
Chairman of Trans Nkisi Layout Landlords, Chief Onyebuchi Ndulue, said the emergency intervention was aimed at protecting lives and property while awaiting a comprehensive solution from the Anambra State Government.
Ndulue said the landlords had committed a substantial amount of money to the drainage works, stressing that the scale of the environmental challenge had made urgent government intervention necessary.
He recalled that the landlords formally sent an SOS to the state government on July 7, 2026, following the worsening erosion problem. According to him, the affected areas were subsequently inspected by officials, including the Commissioners for Works, Physical Planning and Urban Development, and Environment.
The landlords’ chairman commended Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration for responding to their concerns but appealed for a permanent erosion-control project and a properly engineered drainage network for the layout.
He warned that failure to address the expanding gully could lead to further damage during subsequent rainy seasons, as uncontrolled water flows could intensify erosion and threaten homes, infrastructure and residents.
Ndulue said the landlords would continue supporting government efforts by complying with environmental and physical planning regulations, protecting drainage channels and waterways, and maintaining proper sanitation and waste management.
He stressed that while the community’s drainage projects were helping to reduce the immediate danger, the scale of the problem was beyond what residents could sustainably handle alone.
The landlords therefore urged the Soludo administration to deploy the necessary technical and financial resources to permanently tackle the gully erosion and develop a comprehensive drainage and erosion-control system for Trans Nkisi Layout.
