A seemingly ordinary friendship in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, has taken a chilling turn following the alleged murder of a 56-year-old man, Mr Kelechi Madu, allegedly orchestrated by someone he trusted as a friend.
According to the Anambra State Police Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga what began as a frantic search for a missing husband on August 18 has now unfolded into a disturbing murder investigation, with the police alleging that a fraudulent land transaction may have provided the motive for the killing.
Madu had reportedly left his home on the evening of August 17 but failed to return, prompting his worried wife to report the matter to the police the following day.
Police operatives, working alongside members of the local vigilante group and the deceased’s family, immediately launched a search to locate him.
But the search ended in tragedy.
Later that evening, Madu’s wife returned to the police station in distress with the grim news that her husband’s body had been discovered in a nearby bush at Umuobi, Awkuzu.
Police operatives rushed to the scene and found the 56-year-old lying lifeless, with what the Command described as a deep axe wound to his head.
His remains were subsequently evacuated and deposited at a hospital for preservation.
As investigators began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the killing, suspicion reportedly fell on a man known to the deceased.
The police arrested Madu’s 32-year-old friend, Mr Ifeanyi Nwankwo, who allegedly confessed to involvement in the planning and execution of the murder.
According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, Nwankwo had allegedly obtained money from Madu fraudulently, claiming he would assist him in acquiring a parcel of land.
When the alleged transaction became a problem, investigators believe Nwankwo decided to eliminate his friend in an attempt to conceal the alleged fraud and suppress the money he had obtained from him.
The police further alleged that Nwankwo hired two other persons to carry out the killing.
The case has therefore transformed from a missing-person report into a complex murder investigation involving alleged fraud, conspiracy and a betrayal of friendship.
The exact roles of the other alleged accomplices remain subject to investigation, as police intensify efforts to identify and arrest everyone connected with the crime.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the investigation be intensified and that all persons involved in the alleged conspiracy and murder be brought to justice.
The Command also assured residents that it would continue to rely on intelligence-led policing and collaboration with communities to prevent violent crimes and unravel criminal activities.
For the family of Kelechi Madu, however, the investigation comes after an unimaginable loss, a husband and family member who reportedly left home one evening, only for his lifeless body to be discovered hours later in a nearby bush.
The police investigation may ultimately answer the most troubling questions surrounding his death, including who else was involved and what precisely transpired between the alleged land fraud and the fatal attack.
For now, investigators are following the trail of an alleged fraudulent land deal that, according to the police, ended in the brutal killing of a man by people he may have trusted.
