The Leadership Orientation and Basic Rights Advocacy Centre (LOBRAC) has announced plans to partner with the Anambra State Government and State House of Assembly to address the rising cost of housing and introduce effective rent control and regulation in the state.
The Executive Director of LOBRAC, Barr. Stanley Okafor, disclosed this after a meeting with the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Henry Arize, at the State Secretariat Complex, Aroma, Awka.
The meeting focused on the increasing cost of residential accommodation, particularly within the Awka Capital Territory, and the hardship the situation is imposing on ordinary residents.
Okafor said LOBRAC would also collaborate with members of the state legislature to develop a Rent Control and Regulation Bill for consideration and passage into law by the Anambra State House of Assembly.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his swift response to an earlier letter from the organisation highlighting the difficulties residents face in securing affordable accommodation.
“Mr Governor has consistently shown a tendency to stand with the downtrodden,” Okafor said.
However, LOBRAC expressed disappointment that its meeting with the Housing Commissioner did not produce agreement on the urgent need to regulate rents and curb the activities of unlicensed housing agents across the state.
The organisation said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and support the state government’s development initiatives, particularly efforts aimed at providing affordable social housing and establishing a comprehensive rent control framework.
