The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation against unregistered vehicles and motorists who conceal, alter, deface or obstruct their vehicle number plates, warning that violators will face legal sanctions.
The move follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at tackling the growing use of unregistered vehicles and concealed number plates, a trend authorities say undermines crime prevention efforts and public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command had begun enforcing regulations prohibiting the use of unregistered vehicles as well as the concealment, defacement, alteration or obstruction of vehicle registration number plates.
According to the statement, vehicle owners and users are required to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and that registration number plates are clearly displayed and visible at all times.
The police warned that acts such as covering, bending, removing, altering or using unauthorized plate numbers constitute violations of the law and would attract appropriate sanctions.
Speaking on the exercise, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, said the enforcement drive is designed to strengthen security architecture across the state, improve intelligence gathering and facilitate the swift identification of vehicles linked to criminal activities.
He urged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by complying with all vehicle registration requirements and refraining from actions capable of concealing the identity of their vehicles.
The Command also assured residents that officers deployed for the operation had been directed to carry out their duties professionally, courteously and in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the police said the exercise forms part of broader efforts to enhance security and protect residents and visitors across Anambra State.
