How social media reshapes news consumption among Nigerian youths

The way young Nigerians consume news has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade, with social media platforms increasingly replacing traditional newspapers, radio, and television as primary sources of information.

Across university campuses, markets, offices, and homes, millions of Nigerians under the age of 35 now rely on platforms such as TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for breaking news, political updates, entertainment, and public affairs discussions.

Media analysts say the trend reflects a broader digital revolution that has fundamentally changed how information is produced, distributed, and consumed in Africa’s most populous nation.

A survey conducted by National Pride NG among youths in Lagos, Abuja, Awka, Onitsha, Kano, and Port Harcourt revealed that many respondents receive news alerts first through social media before verifying details through traditional news websites.

“I rarely buy newspapers anymore,” said Chinedu Eze, a university student in Anambra State. “Most times, I see breaking news on social media before it appears on television.”

Experts warn that while digital platforms have democratized access to information, they have also increased the spread of misinformation and unverified content.

According to media development consultant Adaobi Okafor, digital literacy has become an essential skill for modern citizens.

“Social media has given everyone a voice, but it has also created challenges for journalists and consumers who must separate facts from falsehoods,” she said.

Industry stakeholders believe credible digital news platforms that prioritize fact-checking and professional reporting will play an increasingly important role in Nigeria’s media landscape.

As internet penetration continues to grow, experts predict that the future of journalism in Nigeria will depend largely on the ability of media organizations to adapt to changing audience habits while maintaining professional standards.
