The presidential ambition of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is facing mixed reactions in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, with some political stakeholders questioning the acceptance of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region.
Officials of the Arewa Consultative Forum and other Northern groups argued that the NDC remains largely unknown to many voters and that Obi faces trust concerns over his perceived stance on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
They also expressed doubts about the extent of Rabiu Kwankwaso’s political influence beyond Kano State, insisting that the party has yet to establish strong grassroots structures across much of the North.
However, NDC leaders dismissed the claims, saying the party is gaining momentum through growing membership, youth mobilisation and expanding structures in several northern states.
Party officials in Borno and Jigawa states said the NDC has recorded significant defections from rival parties and is strengthening its presence ahead of the 2027 elections.
Supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance maintain that the partnership offers Nigerians an alternative platform focused on economic recovery, accountability and national unity.
