A grassroots campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has reached communities in Nnewi North and South Local Government Areas of Anambra State, with stakeholders calling for collective action to curb the growing menace.

The sensitization programme was organized by the Anambra State Multi-Stakeholders Action Committee on the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (MAP-GBV) in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria at the Igwe Orizu Palace, Nnewi.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of MAP-GBV and traditional ruler of Olumbanasa in Anambra West, Igwe Pius Omachonu, urged community leaders and stakeholders to intensify awareness efforts and promote attitudes that support peaceful family and community relationships.

He noted that changing social realities require partners to embrace mutual understanding and shared responsibilities to prevent conflicts that often lead to violence.

Resource persons at the event highlighted various forms of GBV, including physical, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, child marriage, sexual harassment and harmful traditional practices.

Representatives also encouraged victims and witnesses to report cases through appropriate channels, including the Ministry of Women Affairs, FIDA and the National Human Rights Commission.

State Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, expressed concern over the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to abuse, stressing the need for stronger protection mechanisms and support systems.

Participants emphasized prevention, education and community engagement as key strategies for reducing GBV across the state.
