The APGA primary elections in Anambra State were marred by allegations of violence and political interference following an incident in Awka South Local Government Area.
Two operatives of the Agunachemba security outfit are currently receiving treatment at Amaku Teaching Hospital after they were allegedly assaulted by security aides attached to the Anambra State Deputy Governor during the exercise.
The operatives, identified as Okonyia Kingsley and Felix Numbi, were reportedly on duty at Ward 8 when they arrested a suspect accused of attempting to manipulate the primary election.
Sources alleged that the suspect was found with multiple voter cards before tensions escalated at the venue.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the Deputy Governor later arrived at the ward with security personnel, leading to a confrontation with the Agunachemba operatives. During the incident, the operatives were allegedly beaten, disarmed, and had their phones destroyed.
Sources further alleged that the Deputy Governor moved across several wards during the primaries in support of preferred aspirants, a development some party members condemned as interference in the electoral process.
One of the injured operatives, speaking from his hospital bed, alleged that security aides attached to the Deputy Governor ordered the assault on them while carrying out official duties.
The incident has sparked concerns among party members and residents over the credibility and transparency of the APGA primary elections in Anambra State.
