An Onitsha-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Ben Uzuegbu (SAN), has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to resign over alleged credibility concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Uzuegbu expressed doubts about the INEC chairman’s ability to conduct free and fair elections, citing allegations of partisan bias linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking with journalists in Onitsha, the senior lawyer said Prof. Amupitan’s recent actions and decisions had raised questions about his neutrality as electoral umpire.
He criticized the commission’s handling of internal party disputes involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that such decisions could damage public confidence in the electoral process.
Uzuegbu further alleged that the APC now exerts influence over major institutions, including INEC and security agencies, warning that credible elections in 2027 may be difficult under the current system.
