Pope Leo XIV has praised people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), describing them as “prophets” who reveal the true value of life through courage and faith despite severe illness.

Speaking at the Vatican during a meeting with members of the Italian Association for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (AISLA), the Pope commended patients, families, caregivers and volunteers for their resilience and commitment.

He said their daily witness shows that “the goodness and value of life are greater than illness.”

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects movement, speech and breathing. While there is no known cure, AISLA provides care, advocacy and support for patients and families across Italy.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of compassion and human presence in healthcare, noting that true care goes beyond medicine to include emotional and spiritual support. He also praised volunteers for promoting dignity and solidarity, calling their work a response to a “culture of waste.”

Reflecting on Christ’s suffering and resurrection, the Pope reminded the audience that pain does not defeat love or hope, encouraging them to remain strong in faith. He concluded by praying for patients and caregivers, entrusting them to the Virgin Mary’s protection.
