Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Spiritual Head of Soul Revival Outreach, Nnewi, Anambra State, Prophet Ikechukwu Uzukwu, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s electoral system, warning that persistent irregularities could undermine public confidence in democracy.

Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, Uzukwu popularly known as Anambra Prophet alleged that credible elections have been rare in Nigeria for decades, citing historical and recent examples to support his position.

He referenced the 1993 general election conducted under the supervision of Humphrey Nwosu, noting that the process was widely regarded as credible before it was annulled, triggering the June 12 1993 election crisis.

Uzukwu, however, pointed to a more recent exception in Abia State, where the election of Governor Alex Otti was upheld due to the insistence on due process by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Joseph Iloh. He said the outcome has translated into improved governance and tangible democratic dividends for residents.

The cleric warned that electoral malpractice could have serious consequences, urging stakeholders to allow the will of the people to prevail.

“The choice of the masses is not the one announced to them. Nigeria should put a stop to that political madness and allow the people’s will to prevail,” he said.

He also questioned the independence of key democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), suggesting that undue influence weakens the credibility of elections.

Commenting on the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Uzukwu argued that the former Anambra State Governor may continue to face challenges in presidential contests against Bola Tinubu under the current political structure.

He advised Obi to strengthen his political base by building or aligning with a stable party platform, noting that political structure remains a key factor in Nigeria’s electoral success.

Uzukwu further claimed that many politicians who rely on alleged electoral manipulation may struggle in a system that guarantees transparency and fairness.

On national security, he suggested that while Nigeria seeks foreign assistance to combat insurgency, equal attention should be given to addressing electoral integrity, which he described as fundamental to democratic stability.

He also expressed concerns over the country’s economic direction, alleging that borrowed funds have not translated into visible improvements in citizens’ welfare.
