2027: Ejiofor warns Nigerians against empty campaign promises

Anambra-born human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has urged Nigerians to scrutinise politicians’ campaign promises ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against another cycle of unfulfilled expectations.

In a Saturday commentary titled “2027: The Season of Grand Illusions and Unfulfilled Promises,” Ejiofor expressed concern over growing public disillusionment and the apparent decline in mass enthusiasm that characterised previous election campaigns.

He attributed the mood to diminishing confidence in political leadership and the electoral process, noting that many Nigerians who previously travelled long distances to demonstrate support for presidential candidates appeared less enthusiastic.

The lawyer, who holds the traditional title of Dunu-Ezeugosinachi, also questioned the credibility of extravagant campaign promises, including commitments to massive infrastructure development, job creation and improved electricity supply.

He recalled the 2023 presidential campaign pledge concerning uninterrupted electricity, questioning why politicians were returning with fresh promises without being held accountable for previous commitments.

Ejiofor further expressed concern over reports surrounding images of voters allegedly published on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, which generated speculation about possible artificial intelligence manipulation. He noted that INEC had yet to issue an official clarification as of the time of his commentary.

Describing the disconnect between political promises and the economic realities of ordinary Nigerians, he said politicians appeared detached from the hardship caused by high living costs, unemployment and inadequate electricity supply.

“Perhaps they campaign from a different planet, where electricity is uninterrupted, food is affordable and unemployment is merely a statistical inconvenience,” he remarked.

Ejiofor warned voters against being swayed by campaign theatrics, emotional appeals and temporary financial inducements, urging them to demand verifiable records and measurable commitments from candidates.

He stressed that democracy could only thrive when citizens hold elected officials accountable for their promises and performance.

According to him, Nigerians must learn from previous electoral experiences and carefully examine the records of aspirants before giving them another mandate.
He cautioned that failure to hold politicians accountable could expose the electorate to another cycle of disappointment and broken promises.
