President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after about four weeks in Europe, dismissing rumours about his health and declaring that he is fit and ready to resume work.

Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29, after extending his initially announced three-week vacation.

Asked about his health, the President said: “Ready to kick, ready to work. There’s nothing wrong.”

He added that rumours about his health were politically motivated, insisting: “I’m here, healthy, sound, and ready to go.”

His prolonged absence had generated public debate over his health and the constitutional implications of his stay abroad, particularly Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for procedures when a President is on vacation or unable to perform his functions.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who received Tinubu in Lagos, expressed optimism that the President’s return would bring renewed vigour to the administration.

Tinubu is expected to attend Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary activities on October 1, including the premiere of a film honouring late democracy icon MKO Abiola in Lagos.

He is also expected to hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates ahead of the 2027 elections before returning to Abuja.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said Tinubu’s return did not resolve the constitutional questions surrounding his prolonged absence.

Atiku also questioned the measurable outcomes of the President’s engagements abroad and called for clarity on the constitutional steps taken during his absence.
