Amawbia community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has crowned Uchenna Sunday Okonkwo (Okpaligwe II) as its new traditional ruler, ending a five-year chieftaincy crisis following the death of late Igwe Michael Okoye.

The coronation ceremony held at Amawbia Civic Centre attracted traditional rulers, community leaders, women groups and residents from the six villages in the town.

Igwe Okonkwo emerged winner of the December 2025 election and later received a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

During the ceremony, the symbolic “Ofo Amawbia,” representing authority and peace, was handed over by Akajiofo Nze Dr. U.S.A. Aghanya, while Ezeana Ibekwe performed the crowning rites.

Former APGA National Chairman, Victor Oye, described the new monarch as a man rooted in Igbo culture and tradition.

Former Women Affairs Minister, Josephine Anenih, and community leaders urged residents to support the monarch to strengthen peace and unity in Amawbia.

In his speech, Igwe Okonkwo promised to lead with fairness, protect the community’s traditions and unite Amawbia people at home and in the diaspora for development.
