Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged elderly Nigerians to make regular physical exercise part of their lifestyle, saying staying active is vital to ageing gracefully and maintaining fitness.
Obasanjo made the call on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after leading about 100 members of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Senior Citizens Club on a 2.5-kilometre walk as part of the club’s keep-fit programme.
According to Punch Newspapers, the senior citizens walked from the clubhouse within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library to Iyana Mortuary and back to the clubhouse.
Obasanjo said the exercise was designed not only to keep members of the club physically active but also to encourage other senior citizens to remain committed to healthy living as they grow older.
He noted that membership of the senior citizens club was generally open to people aged 70 and above, adding that he was also approaching the age bracket.
According to him, exercise is a vital element in ensuring that people grow old “gracefully and graciously” while retaining the ability to live active and meaningful lives.
Pointing to one of the participants, whom he identified as a 90-year-old man, Obasanjo said the elderly man remained remarkably fit and demonstrated that advancing age should not automatically mean physical inactivity.
The former president’s message aligns with health guidance that regular physical activity in later life can help maintain strength, mobility and balance while supporting cardiovascular and mental wellbeing.
The President of the club, Group Captain Ayobamiji Erinfolami (retd.), commended Obasanjo for leading by example and motivating senior citizens to remain physically active.
Another participant and close aide to the former president, Elder Udo Umoren, described the exercise as the “needed tonic” to keep elderly people going, while appreciating Obasanjo for his continued encouragement.
