The Anambra State Police Command, through its Safe School Operatives, in collaboration with concerned community members, has rescued nine persons following a flood incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka.
The Anambra State Police Command Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, when seven school children and three adults were caught in the flood while travelling along the affected route.
Following a distress call, the Safe School Operatives swiftly mobilised to the area and, with the assistance of community members, rescued seven school children and two adults and moved them to safety.
However, one child involved in the incident remains missing, prompting the Police Command to activate sustained search and rescue operations in the area.
The search is being carried out in collaboration with community members and relevant stakeholders and will continue until the missing child is located and accounted for.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, PSC, MNIPS, has directed that the search operation be sustained and expanded.
He also urged residents, particularly those living or operating around the affected route, to provide the Police and other responding agencies with any information that could assist in locating the missing child.
The Command further advised parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads, bridges and waterways, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Parents and guardians were also urged to ensure that children do not attempt to cross flooded or otherwise dangerous routes.
The Anambra State Police Command said it remains committed to protecting school children and strengthening collaboration with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent avoidable loss of lives during emergencies.
