The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, has charged matriculating students to intensively work hard for the attainment of excellent academic performance in the institution.

Dr. Awuzie gave the admonition in her speech during the 42nd matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted students at the convocation arena of the polytechnic on Friday, January 23, 2026.

In her words, ”Dear matriculating students, Federal Polytechnic, Oko has, over the years, earned a strong reputation for academic excellence, discipline, innovation and the production of skilled manpower for national development. As you begin this new chapter of your lives, you must understand that excellence here is not accidental: it is achieved through commitment, integrity and perseverance.
“Management has remained deliberate, focused, and proactive in pursuing both internal initiatives and external support to enhance our learning and working environment.
“Management has also taken delivery of additional student chairs and desks, which are currently being installed in lecture halls across the Oko campus to further improve teaching and learning conditions.
“Therefore, dear students, I urge you to take full advantage of the facilities and opportunities provided by this institution. Be disciplined in your studies, attend lectures and practical sessions regularly, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the polytechnic. Let me emphasize that ignorance of these rules will not be accepted as an excuse for misconduct.
“As a polytechnic, our mandate is to integrate theory with practice. You are, therefore, encouraged to develop not only intellectually but also practically, creatively, and entrepreneurially. Embrace innovation, digital literacy, and the responsible use of technology. In a rapidly evolving world, adaptability, integrity, and ethical leadership are indispensable.”
She further implored the students to stay away completely from drug abuse, cultism and the likes, saying that the polytechnic has zero tolerance for these vices. She added that cultism, stealing, physical and sexual assaults are highly prohibited.
“While striving for academic excellence, be mindful of your character. Shun cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, indiscipline, cybercrime, indecent behaviour, and all forms of social vices. The Federal Polytechnic, Oko maintains zero tolerance for such acts, and offenders will be sanctioned in accordance with established regulations.
“To our parents and guardians, I sincerely appreciate your confidence in Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Be assured that management remains committed to providing a safe, conducive, and intellectually stimulating environment for your children and wards.”
The Rector commended the Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students for their dedication, resilience and collective efforts in sustaining and advancing the standards of the institution; while further advising the matriculating students, having been presented with an opportunity – not to waste it.
“Be focused, disciplined, innovative and excellent in all your endeavours. Let your stay in Federal Polytechnic, Oko prepare you not merely for certificates, but for service, leadership and lifelong relevance,” she added.
She also said that the school management is doing everything within her power to make the learning and teaching environment conducive for both students and staff in a bid to guarantee excellent academic performance by hardworking students.
