Fedpoly Oko, Rector, Dr. Awuzie, seeks partnership with police over increasing insecurity

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, on Monday, June 23, 2025, received the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. (Mrs) Chioma Irene Amuzie, and the Head of Federal Establishments in Anambra, Mr. Chijoke Okechukwu, in his office at the Anambra state Police Command headquarters, Awka.

The visit aimed to jointly develop plans and address specific security challenges in Oko, and especially around the polytechnic and other federal government facilities in the state.

The police commissioner, during their interaction, sought greater cooperation from the management of the polytechnic to help the police serve them better.

He regretted the unfortunate incident, of 19th June, 2025, which according to an eyewitness account, revealed how armed criminals operating with a motorcycle and black Lexus 350 SUV without a plate number, started shooting indiscriminately at the Total junction, injuring four persons, including a lady. The hoodlums abducted two other people at the Tipper junction before they fled the scene.

In her response, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Amuzie, thanked the police for their prompt response at the scene of the incident, as it prevented further loss of lives and properties.

She pledged to work with the police to step up surveillance and provide necessary information for security agencies, especially in the ongoing investigation of the incident.

In attendance at the meeting were the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigations Department, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Intelligence Department, and other senior officers.

Highlight of the meeting included presentation of gift to the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, by the Commissioner of Police.

Recall that at least four people were killed and others injured last Thursday when unidentified gunmen opened fire in Oko community, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North local government area of Anambra state.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the community around 8:40pm, firing indiscriminately near the Total Junction and Tipper Junction, areas close to the school.

Local sources said four students were shot dead, and about seven others were critically injured and rushed to nearby hospitals; while two other persons were reportedly abducted.

A disturbing video circulating on social media shows two students, a male and a female, lying in pools of their blood and struggling to breathe.
