COMMENTARY: Let Anambra Decide Freely And Fairly

 By David Onwuchekwa

As November 8, 2025, draws near, all eyes are fixed on Anambra State where the electorate will once again march to the polls to elect their next Governor or renew the mandate of the incumbent, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

This crucial exercise transcends political affiliations and party loyalties; it is a defining moment for democracy in Anambra, the Light of the Nation.

What matters most now is not who wins or loses, but how the process unfolds. The conduct of the election must reflect fairness, transparency, and credibility in every sense.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, and candidates have already invested enormous resources, financially and otherwise, to ensure a smooth process. The people of Anambra deserve nothing less than an election that justifies this effort and upholds their collective faith in democracy.

Ndi Anambra are known for their political awareness and vigilance. They will not accept excuses for failure or manipulation. The days of impunity, when elections were marred by ballot snatching, vote buying, intimidation, and doctored results, should belong to history.

The people’s will must be allowed to prevail without distortion or interference.

Sadly, Nigeria’s electoral history is dotted with instances where the ballot was undermined by rigging and malpractice.

Many times, the true winners were denied their mandates until the courts intervened, leaving behind bitterness, disillusionment, and deep distrust in the electoral system. Anambra cannot afford a repeat of that old, regrettable pattern.

Hence, this is a clarion call to all stakeholders, INEC officials, security agencies, political actors, and even the so-called “academic experts” often recruited to manipulate figures, to act with integrity.

Professors and intellectuals must protect the sanctity of the ballot, not desecrate it. The power of the pen and intellect should serve democracy, not subvert it.

The beauty of democracy lies in the people’s right to choose their leaders freely. That right must not be mortgaged or compromised under any guise.

Let Anambra State stand as a shining example of electoral decency and democratic maturity. The world is watching.

Ultimately, this election is not just about who occupies the Government House in Awka, it is about the future, the credibility of our institutions, and the moral conscience of the State. Let the will of the people prevail. Let Anambra decide, freely and fairly.
