A 25-year-old man, identified as Bakeru Iwal, has been confirmed dead after part of an old building collapsed on him during demolition at Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The deceased, said to be one of the workers engaged in the demolition, was reportedly inside the structure when a section suddenly caved in, trapping him underneath the debris.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said operatives attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters promptly responded after receiving the report.
Ikenga said the police cordoned off the area, documented the scene and commenced preliminary investigations.
He said the deceased’s body had been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation, pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
According to the police spokesperson, preliminary information indicated that the building was being demolished when a section of the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping one of the workers.
Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and thoroughly to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He said the investigation would determine whether anyone bears responsibility, with appropriate action to be taken based on its outcome.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, assuring that further updates would be provided as necessary.
