Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria has all the human and natural resources needed to prosper, stressing that the country only needs competent, honest and purposeful leadership.
Obi spoke as a guest and panellist alongside other presidential candidates and their representatives at the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He said Nigeria’s poverty and hunger were largely consequences of years of mismanagement and corruption, insisting that the country had no justification for extreme poverty or food imports given its enormous agricultural potential.
Obi said greater investment in agriculture, particularly in Northern Nigeria, could create millions of jobs, boost food production and position the country as a major food exporter.
On fuel subsidy removal, he reiterated his 2023 position that corruption in the system should first have been addressed before a carefully planned and phased removal.
He said savings from subsidy removal should be transparently invested in agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, security and poverty reduction.
“Nigeria has all it needs to prosper. What remains is competent, honest, and purposeful leadership that puts the common good above personal interests,” Obi said.
