The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has disclosed that Nigeria’s proposed State Police framework was developed after an extensive study of policing systems in India, the United States and Pakistan.
Speaking at a one-day workshop on State Police organised by the Nigeria Police Institute at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre in Abuja, Disu said the committee conducted comparative analyses of countries operating state policing before drafting recommendations for Nigeria.
He urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to actively participate in the ongoing national conversation on State Police through informed engagement, objective analysis and public enlightenment.
According to the IGP, although governors had already set up committees on the proposal, the police committee produced its framework within 17 days, describing it as the foundation of the current deliberations on the reform.
Vanguard reports that Disu further disclosed that retired Inspectors-General of Police reviewed the document and made valuable recommendations to strengthen the proposed framework.
He expressed optimism that the collaborative efforts of security stakeholders would produce a State Police system capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
