The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Anambra State Chapter, has renewed its annual cash award for the best graduating students of the Urban and Regional Planning (URP) Department of Federal Polytechnic Oko.
The announcement was made during the institute’s visit to the institution as part of activities marking its 60th anniversary celebration.
Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Dr. Joachim Ulasi, disclosed that each outstanding graduate would receive N25,000 and a certificate.
He added that beneficiaries from 2016 to date would also receive the outstanding awards, while the department was urged to compile the list of eligible graduates.
Speaking during the visit, Anambra representative on the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC), Val Ezenwa, called on institutions offering URP programmes to provide modern equipment such as computer software, books and workshop facilities to improve practical training.
He also appealed to alumni associations to support their departments through donations of relevant facilities.
NITP State Chairman, Ifeanyi Igwilo, described town planning as a vital profession that ensures orderly development and sustainable communities.
He encouraged students to remain proud of their choice of career, assuring them of abundant opportunities after graduation.
Igwilo also urged lecturers in the department who were yet to register with the institute to do so in order to enjoy the benefits of professional membership.
