The Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Ikezue, has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on erosion-ravaged communities across the district.
Speaking in Awka, Ikezue described the worsening gully erosion as an environmental and humanitarian crisis threatening lives, homes, roads, schools and farmlands in the seven local government areas of Anambra Central.
He cited affected communities including Enugwu-Agidi, Ogidi and Obosi, warning that continued inaction could lead to the displacement of residents from their ancestral homes.
The LP candidate called on President Bola Tinubu to release emergency intervention funds and direct relevant agencies, including the Ecological Project Office and the Federal Ministry of Environment, to undertake urgent erosion control projects.
Whie acknowledging efforts by the Anambra State Government, Ikezue said the scale of the disaster now requires stronger federal intervention and collaboration with stakeholders.
He explained that erosion should not be politicised, urging authorities to act quickly to prevent further destruction and protect lives and property.
