Trump’s Iran truce faces early turbulence as tensions threaten peace

The peace agreement brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the recent conflict with Iran is already facing significant challenges, raising doubts about whether the fragile truce can survive.

CNN reports that the memorandum of understanding signed last week halted direct hostilities between Washington and Tehran, reopened the Strait of Hormuz and offered economic incentives in exchange for Iran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.

However, critical issues, including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme and its stockpile of enriched uranium, remain unresolved and are expected to be negotiated over the next 60 days.

Although mediators from Qatar and Pakistan reported “encouraging progress” after talks in Switzerland, fresh tensions have exposed the agreement’s vulnerability.

Iran has sought to strengthen its bargaining position by threatening disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, while Trump responded with renewed warnings against Tehran.

At the same time, clashes involving Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon have threatened to derail the peace process.

The agreement is also drawing criticism in Washington. Some Republicans and Democrats argue that the United States conceded too much by easing sanctions and supporting a proposed $300 billion economic recovery package for Iran before securing a permanent settlement.

Supporters of the deal, however, insist diplomacy remains the best alternative to another costly war. They argue that despite its flaws, the agreement offers the strongest opportunity to prevent renewed conflict, stabilize global oil markets and avoid further economic disruption.

Political analysts say the coming weeks will determine whether Trump’s vision of a nuclear-free Iran and a more stable Middle East can be achieved or whether the region will slide back toward confrontation.
