8-year-old pupil wins Anambra spelling bee, bags ₦200,000

Eight-year-old Master Chinemelum Chinonso, a Primary 4 pupil of Gaius Benton School, Oko, has emerged winner of the Orumba Spelling Bee Season 3 competition organized by the Joseph Onuorah Foundation (JOF).


Chinemelum outperformed contestants from over 150 schools across Orumba area to claim the top prize of ₦200,000, becoming one of the youngest winners in the competition’s history.


Miss Geoffrey Chinaza, 10, of Pope John Paul Nursery/Primary School, Oko, finished second and received ₦100,000, while Master Okoye God’s Purpose, 11, of Living Spring School, Oko, came third.


Speaking after the event, JOF founder, High Chief Joseph Onuorah, said the competition was created to promote literacy, vocabulary development, confidence and academic excellence among children aged 7 to 12.


He praised Chinemelum’s outstanding performance, noting that the young pupil displayed exceptional intelligence, confidence and mastery of language throughout the contest.


The grand finale, held at the Town Hall, Enumgbom Village, Ndiowu, attracted parents, teachers, education stakeholders and community leaders.

Participants commended the foundation for its continued investment in education and for encouraging reading culture among pupils.
