Human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has criticized the growing trend of political prophecies by clerics, particularly those of popular preacher, Primate Elijah Ayodele.

In a statement titled “When the Pulpit Becomes a Political Forecasting Centre,” Ejiofor expressed concern that frequent political predictions by religious leaders could blur the line between spiritual guidance and political commentary.

According to him, ministers of the Gospel are primarily called to preach faith, morality, repentance, and spiritual transformation rather than engage in constant forecasts about elections, political alliances, and power struggles.

He argued that democracy thrives on institutions, public participation, and the will of the people, warning that repeated political prophecies could fuel anxiety and uncertainty in the political space.

Ejiofor said while clerics have the right to comment on societal issues, there is a clear distinction between offering moral guidance and becoming regular political forecasters.

He urged religious leaders to focus more on evangelism, discipleship, and addressing moral challenges facing society, stressing that the Church serves best as the conscience of society rather than an extension of political contests.

The lawyer further stated that Nigeria needs spiritual leaders who speak truth to power and inspire faith, rather than those perceived as being overly fascinated with political developments.
