Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, has declared that the deadline for the removal of illegal structures and shanties in Nnewi will not be extended.
Speaking during an inspection of a proposed government development site along Eme Court Road, Nnewi, Ojukwu said the two-week ultimatum issued to affected property owners remains final.
He warned that enforcement would begin immediately after the expiration of the notice period, adding that the exercise is in line with Governor Charles Soludo’s urban renewal agenda.
The Commissioner urged residents to comply with the directive and revealed plans to launch “Operation Show Your Physical Planning Permit” across the state to promote orderly development.
Ojukwu and his team also monitored the marking of illegal structures and issuance of demolition notices in parts of Nkwo Market, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital axis, Akamili and Uruagu.
He said the ongoing “Operation Zero Shanties” would continue to eliminate encroachments on public spaces, unsafe buildings and structures erected under high-tension power lines.
More than 500 owners and occupiers of illegal, dilapidated and unsafe structures in Nnewi have already been served demolition notices as part of efforts to transform the city into a modern industrial and commercial hub.
