Court remands Anambra native doctor over security law allegations

Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has remanded a Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as Muomiri Afuluanya, at the Amawbia Correctional Centre over alleged violations of the state’s Homeland Security Law.

The PUNCH reports that the Presiding judge, Justice Jude Obiora, ordered the remand after rejecting a request by the defendant’s counsel for him to remain in hospital on health grounds pending the hearing of his bail application.

The prosecution opposed the application, insisting that the defendant be kept in lawful custody. In his ruling, Justice Obiora stated that a hospital was not a constitutionally recognised detention facility and ordered Ezenagu’s remand in a correctional centre.

The matter was adjourned to June 19 for further proceedings.

Ezenagu was arrested on March 26 by operatives of the Anambra State Government’s security outfit, Agunechemba, over alleged breaches of the Homeland Security Law.

Security operatives also reportedly searched his residence in Nnewi as part of ongoing investigations.
