Human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has described May 30 as a solemn memorial reflection day dedicated to remembering the victims of the Nigerian Civil War and the humanitarian crisis that accompanied it.

In a statement marking the annual remembrance, Ejiofor said the day serves as an opportunity to honor those who lost their lives and to reflect on the painful lessons of the conflict.

He recalled the suffering experienced by many families during and after the war, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, and the destruction of communities.

According to him, the memories of those events remain significant for many people, particularly in the South-East.

Ejiofor explained the importance of preserving historical memory, promoting truth, and fostering reconciliation.

He noted that genuine healing requires acknowledgment of past tragedies, compassion for victims, and a commitment to preventing similar occurrences in the future.

He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the value of peace, justice, unity, and human dignity, while honoring the memories of those affected by the conflict.

“Remembrance is not about vengeance but about truth, reconciliation, and ensuring that the sacrifices and sufferings of the past are never forgotten,” he said.
