Anambra community excited over UNIZIK pre-science centre upgrade

Residents of Mbaukwu community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed excitement over plans by Nnamdi Azikiwe University to upgrade its Pre-Science Centre in the community into a mini-campus.


Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bond Anyaehie, disclosed the development during a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Mbaukwu, Igwe Peter Anugwu.


Anyaehie said new intakes for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme would begin studies at the Mbaukwu centre from September, increasing the student population to over 2,000.


He noted that work had already commenced on upgrading facilities at the centre and called for stronger collaboration between the university and the host community, especially in areas of hostel accommodation and security.


According to him, the development would position Mbaukwu as an important educational hub in Anambra State.


Responding, Igwe Anugwu described the proposed upgrade as a lifelong dream come true, assuring the university of the community’s support towards the success of the project.


Also speaking, Professor of Accounting, Austin Odum, said the community had long desired the transformation of the centre into a full campus structure, expressing optimism that the institution would regain its past growth and student population.
